Fabrizio Rigutti / "A weight that I carry with me"
Fabrizio Rigutti (b. 1990, Spilimbergo, Italy) is a multidisciplinary artist and activist currently pursuing studies in Painting at the Academy of Arts in Venice. His work, spanning various media, explores the intricate intersection of technology, ecosystems, sustainability, and politics. Rigutti often reimagines everyday objects, decontextualizing them to create new dynamics and challenge conventional perspectives. With a critical lens, he addresses anti-capitalist values, species preservation, and the importance of fostering communities. “A weight that I carry with me” stems from the chance discovery of an object several years ago, the circumstances of which have faded from memory. It is an old-fashioned balance weight, chosen for its plasticity and its simple, unassuming form, detached from its original purpose. It resides among the objects destined for a personal home yet to be built. No longer a mere counterweight, it has become a specific object for a specific weight. Inspired by this found object, a 1:1 scale replica was created through a process that balances technique and technology. Cast in a sand mold, the replica is made of aluminum, a material distinct from the original in color, density, and specific weight. The unfinished nature of the replica preserves the traces and imperfections of the manual process, and when placed alongside the original, it highlights the journey from choice to abandonment, memory, and mark. This work is a reflection on the theme of renunciation.
